Our territory is located in the heart of Vendée, between La Roche sur Yon and Luçon. You will admire several types of landscapes: the plain, the « bocage » (small fields and hedges), the marshes, the vineyards. Water is present everywhere as there is a river running through every village of the Mareuil area (whether it is Le Lay, Le Marillet, La Doulaye or La Smagne)

The « Communauté de Communes du Pays Mareuillais » (Mareuil District Council) was created in January  1997 and gathers together the 11 small towns which make up the administrative area called the «  canton » : Bessay, La Bretonnière-La Claye, Château-Guibert, Corpe, La Couture, Mareuil sur Lay-Dissais, Les Moutiers sur le Lay, Péault, Les Pineaux, Rosnay and Sainte Pexine. This represents more than 18,000 hectares and 8,549 inhabitants, as of 1st January 2009.

In April 2008,  Mr Jean-Pierre HOCQ, Mayor of Mareuil sur Lay-Dissais and General Councillor, became President of the « Communauté de Communes » (District Council).  The Council of the Mareuil Area District is composed of 31 members who are appointed by the Town Councillors of each village.
